Photography Elective

By Braelynn Hutchinson

Quincy High is filled with many electives. However, there is no photography class. The art program in Quincy High is wonderful; many beautiful pictures are drawn, painted, sculpted and carved. Wouldn’t taking pictures with a camera be just as artistic? Many students have asked about adding a photography class. Because of The Pony Express, anyone can write an article telling the city of the events, and successes of Quincy High. What if students could also show them through visual images as photo-journalists? Words can move a person to imagine what the author is saying to a certain degree, but, as the cliché suggests, pictures say a thousand words. Why not add a photography class at Quincy High?

Having photographers in the school could help with advertising for school events. It could also demonstrate the work and excitement at various after-school clubs and sport programs. Additionally, photos could present our students and staff and the efforts being made here to make our school a great place to learn. Student photographers could take pictures to be displayed in The Pony Express, the yearbook and on the many new bulletin boards in our new building. Maybe photography could be part of the art program, as an elective or as an after-school club. Can you picture how exciting this program could be?

Swine Flu

By Julia Yee

As the flu season rapidly approaches, many of us are worrying about the possibility of the swine flu appearing in Quincy High. Though we are all hoping for the swine flu to skip over us, we must think realistically. There are many ways to make sure we keep our school and ourselves healthy. Here are some easy tips to help keep the swine flu away:

  • Get the H1N1 Vaccine- It’s the #1 way to prevent Swine Flu.
  • Wash your hands frequently- You never know what germs you may pick up from various sources.
  • Use cough and sneeze etiquette-Cough/sneeze into your elbow or into a tissue.
  • Stay home when you are sick and have a fever- There is no need to spread flu germs to others.

Make sure to drink your orange juice, and keep that hand sanitizer handy. By following these few simple tips you will help QHS stay healthy.

U.S.S. Salem: Halloween Haunted Ship

By: Julie Fox

Members of the MA-061 ROTC core at Quincy High School have the opportunity to volunteer on the U.S.S. Salem during the month of October for its annual Haunted Ship event. The U.S.S. Salem, anchored in the city of Quincy, stages a haunted ship, which is visited by hundreds of people from around the greater Boston area.

For the past three years I have been a “haunter” for the Haunted Ship. This takes a huge amount of preparation a few months before opening day. Performers brainstorm, developing themes and costumes. Then the settings and scenes are all built and decorated. Designated spaces are assigned to each performer.

Opening night is a favorite among the participants. Once the performers are in costume with make-up and masks, the scary personalities of each character are unleashed. There are many characters on board to surprise and frighten the audience. The roles vary from year to year, but some of the most popular characters are dead busboys, clowns, butchers, aliens, demonic children, and zombies.

Overall, the Haunted Ship is a fun experience for both the participants and the audience. Come and take a Guided Ghost Tour and enjoy the terror next year during the month of October. You will be impressed by the creativity of the cast, but hopefully you won’t be jolted overboard in fear!
